How to know which path to choose

The question everyone, ever wants to know the answer to.

And here it is...

You don't.

Yup, there you go, there's my gem of advice. It sounds like a pretty crappy one right? But honestly, when I embraced that, things changed.
I am a perfectionist, and I give it a whole new meaning, I am brutal to myself if I don't meet my own standards and always doing the best thing, choosing the perfect words to say at the exact right time, singing every note perfectly with no pitchyness, never making a silly mistake in a relationship. Wouldn't we all love it if things just fell into place like that?
Well they don't and you can't mould and shape everything around you, and that's what makes it so fun to be human.
Four years ago, I would have laughed at you if you told me I was going to be in an incredible relationship that, 3 and a half years in was as strong as Jay-Z and Beyonce. I would have laughed even harder if you'd told me he would be away for 6 months at a time playing drums in random countries whilst I stayed in the UK. Yet here I am, sat in Bahrain, taking 10 days out of my crazy (Boss Bitch) work life back in London, to see my amazing drummer boy 3 months into his 6 month stint.
Yeah, I've made some bad choices, some very very bad choices, that landed me in hospital for long periods of time (A story I may or may never tell on here, we'll see) but no matter how bad things get, there is always a path to take to rectify it. I also believe that any bad path can be turned into a good one. You learn from everything.
Somethings may seem like the worst at the time, yeah maybe you did something really bad or someone did something really bad to you, but thats the beauty. Great things can come from tiny screw ups, there is always a next day and there is always a chance for something awesome to happen.

I feel like this is turning into a full on hippy, peace and love post, so I'm going to shut up now. The point, however, still stands.
Sometimes just shut your eyes and walk down a path. Who knows what will happen, who knows who you might meet...you just need to put yourself out there for these things to happen...

Ever wondered how to live without wifi?

No, you probably haven't. Let's be honest...

You wouldn't put yourself through that torture unless you absolutely had to. No, torture isn't too strong of a word, it is like weaning yourself off a drug or cigarettes, you go through phases of withdrawal. But do you come out stronger?

We moved into our new flat 2 months ago now, and we got wifi 2 days ago. TWO WHOLE MONTHS. NO INTERNET. NO CONNECTION TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD.

Stage one.

'What do I do? Seriously, there is nothing to do other than stare at a wall. Activities? What are they?'
This is the weird one, you feel disconnected and it's funny how you GENUINELY have no idea what to do or how to communicate with people on a face to face level without getting awkward and running out of things to do. I kept finding myself getting so bored and sitting there just doing nothing... If you're wondering, going through photos on your phone and deleting them, because you only know how to be on your phone, is still nothing.

Stage two.

People are actually interesting, it starts getting easier to live without the constant pinging of some kind of computer.
I personally realised in this stage, I had finished university a month ago at this point, my boyfriend had moved to a land far, far away and I was living with my two best friends. So umm.... do something? And I did... I got a place on an internship, like an actual career boosting internship, not just walking around selling clothes. (I'm aware that is a career, and not an easy one at that, it's just not my choice)
I started DOING things with my friends, going out, getting to REALLY know them, spending quality time with them and making memories. Also started really thinking about what I want to do with my future, networking, making valuable connections with people.
I have always been healthy and cared about fitness, but I have started to be much more in tune with my body and actually dedicated to being the best version of myself, physically and mentally. Fitness is actually an incredible feeling!

Stage three.

Frustration. Yeah, stage two seemed all too good to be true? That's because it was... All of the above is 100% true and I still swear by it all...BUT...
You realise in this world, you now NEED internet to actually do all the things you need to do in these cool jobs you now have, to contact the people you have now met and to save the photos of the memories you have now created. Saying that, I do believe you can do it without internet, but you have to have some seriously strong moral thoughts on this and powerful commitment to the belief. I don't, sorry. The Electronic Music, and just music scene in general, really doesn't allow for that.

Stage four.

A whole lot of switching between stages two and three.
The arguments, the annoyance of losing money and time thanks to jobs you can't do/take longer. Being forced into actually SEEING people, resulting in having way more fun. Not being able to talk to your boyfriend properly other than in Pret (Pret, I love you forever). Thinking you've got it, then realising Talk Talk have screwed it up again, and again, and again. Paying £90 a month on phone bills because you've had to pay for more data, and then ran out again and realised - IPHONES DON'T WORK WITHOUT DATA... like... AT ALL.

Stage five.

The day you finally get internet again! Yeah, so, what does it do again?

Over doing it and spending far too much online shopping. Writing blog posts. Taking the opportunity to work from home, in your PJs all day, finally.
Basically, I am currently binging or you could call it a relapse...

BUT. Lesson?

I genuinely prefer human contact.
I have learnt so much about myself on this little internet cleanse. Yes, I had limited access to internet whilst in the office or for those few days a month I actually had data on my phone, (Snapchat and Instagram apparently RINSE all data) but that's the definition of weaning right?
I have over come so many of my weird hang ups, just as a result of going out and putting myself in scary/beneficial situations.
I have done SO much for myself, partially because Will (boyfriend) hasn't been here as well (sorry to admit that one Willy...what can I say, you're needy ;).)

Proof that I have actually stepped outside my house and not hid under a rock? Okay, here you go:

1|| Your Mum's House, The Nest with Casey
2|| Walk to work over Tower Bridge
3|| New Job includes being in studios. Yeah. Awesome, I know
4|| My little Chia Seed
5|| All Saints Squad. Ollie, Emma & Alex. Babes.
6|| SW4 Festival with the Chia Seed
7|| So this happened at work. A dog. In a bag.
8|| This also happened at work... Clearly there were mixed feelings.

So, I recommend it, put yourself into internet rehab/cleanse/whatever you wanna call it. It might actually shock you how much fun you have and how much there is to learn about the people you already know, they aren't actually that lame.

Open your eyes, let yourself be inspired!

Where do I start with last week? Well, it has been a roller coaster for sure, but an inspiring one.
Firstly, I am lucky enough to be going to a very good music school in West London, BIMM. Honestly, it hasn't always been good (sorry), but this year it has definitely stepped it's game up and I will now finally say that I recommend it to any musician looking to study in London.
Now, being in my final year is really starting to sink in.   I need to get things moving with my music and getting past a lot of the personal things that have been holding me back. It is easy to let time pass you by, work within your comfort zone, but not actually do anything to make a difference to getting to the next level. I believe what is said a lot, but few people really take in, 'Hurdles are all in your mind'. Yes, they may physically be there, like something new you need to learn, passing exams or not having enough money to support what you want to do (these are my current hurdles). I say it is all in your mind because all it takes to get passed these is changing your mindset. Okay, I need to learn something new... so stop looking at things you can't afford and go learn! I need to pass exams, that is obvious, REVISE. I don't have money...cut back on certain costs or things I don't need and work with what you've currently got, prioritise!
Of course, some things really are an issue and for some people, it might be very different. But if you switch your mindset to be more positive, as I said before, everything just comes that little bit more manageable.

I've gone off on a bit of a tangent. So, inspiring moment of the week, number one.
BIMM organised a couple of incredible masterclasses this week, the first one with Ella Eyre and her management, Charlie Arme and James Merritt. I'm going to have to say it, but my God is that girl beautiful! Not just in the way she looks but her personality, how clearly she sees the world for what it is, she is so down to earth! It just goes to show, if you are successful at a young age, you don't automatically turn into a spoilt diva.
Her and her management had so many insightful, inspiring things to say, I would be here all day if I tried to share it all, but I will give you a few of the main things.
Ella definitely seemed to understand that you have to work for everything you want in life, there aren't any shortcuts or cheats, especially as a singer, you really have to sacrifice some things. In many people's cases, your social life is going to take a huge hit. But in the long run, missing a few nights out (no one is saying all of them) for success in a career that takes you all over the world, that you love, it is worth it. Working, university and personal projects are a lot for anyone to handle! Just don't be afraid to say you can't, if your friends are true friends, they will support you and stick with you.
Another point raised was how much this generation uses social media, it is all well and good having your head stuck in the sand, but the rest of the world will be flying pass you. Social media presence is so so important to get your name and image out there. Don't just put any old garbage out there though, be clever, think about what you want your image to be and how you want people to see you. Sometimes it isn't necessarily garbage, it can be a good image or track, but it still won't be how you want to be seen, think about EVERYTHING that goes out to the public before you post it.
Carrying on from that, when you are thinking about your image you have to bare in mind, you can't be something that someone has done before. You have to be different, unique, you have to have something that stands out as YOU.
The main thing that was obvious though, was how well Ella and her management got on, and the respect they had for each other. Neither of them was on top or in charge, they listened to each other and worked well as a team. In this industry, it is so easy to be dragged in by the promises and dazzling offers that you find yourself signed up to a deal with someone who tells you what to do and doesn't care at all about what you want...and then you're stuck.
Key piece of information: If you have the right management, positivity, understanding and respect for the people around you, you will be able to create the music you want.
I LOVE this quote that someone said to Ella once, 'You are the CEO of yourself, your own brand'. You have to look after yourself, what you stand for and make decisions with great thought. Your life literally depends on it. Be picky and forceful with what you want, it shows you care.

Number two, is another masterclass BIMM organised, they were on a roll last week!
MNEK! Seriously, the most genuine, intelligent, funny guy ever and he said he loved my ink and anyone who says that is cool by me.
So much of what he said backed up exactly what Ella Eyre was saying, you really have to be in the right place at the right time, or rather, PUT YOURSELF IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT ALL TIMES. Then eventually, you will find yourself there. Also, you have to put in so many hours, the hours you put in, you will get back. In a year’s time when you look back, you will see how far you have come.
MNEK was talking to us all about song writing, giving us a few little tips and ways to change our process of writing electronic based tracks.
There is something about listening to someone basically my age, who is successful, talking about how they do something I have been trying to teach myself for the past two years. It just makes so much more sense, and more understandable. It gave me the courage I needed to push myself and motivate myself to get off my ass and go for what I want, in a way that I hadn't in so long! It kind of helps that the guy is a genius, some people can tell you for days their ways of doing things, but it just takes one inspiring person to suggest their way, you try it and it all clicks into place. Since that masterclass I have been messing about on Logic, on my iMac, constantly trying to find new sounds and write new tracks.

If I had one piece of advice from last week it would be to listen to people. And I mean REALLY LISTEN. Take notes, record them, contact them again later if you need to, but when people are talking about something you could benefit from, take in everything they say. Definitely don't pass up an opportunity to speak to and hear from these people!! If you are in a position to talk to people and learn from people and all you have to do is put yourself out there and ask, then do it! I did that last week with a tutor who isn't my normal tutor, and I learnt SO much in just a 45 minute, or so, chat with him in a coffee shop.

LET YOURSELF BE INSPIRED. Don't hide away if you feel inspiration seeping, that is the worst thing you can do.

Anyway. Rant/Essay/Hopefully helpful words OVER.
Now, go and do stuff...

Third Year Degree Students: The Fear Settling In...

I can literally smell it. I can definitely feel it. I can't hear it though...The fear and panic. I can't hear it because everyone has locked themselves away or are silently panicking and coping in their own weird little ways.

Welcome to third year of a degree.

Past students will brush it off, "Man up, we had to do it, just don't talk to anyone for a while". Future third years don't get it at all, "Why are you being such a melt for? Just come out, one night isn't going to make a difference". YES IT IS. You will find out when you get here!!

These are a few ways of coping, not dealing, with the panic I have seen and my suggestions to help:

  • Denial. Pretending you have enough time? If you don't look at it, it will go away? It won't, this is FINALS of a DEGREE. This is the one time, doing the bare minimum probably won't work for you! And to be honest, if you have scraped it through this far doing that, imagine what you could do if you actually put your mind to it? You'd finish with one hell of a bang.
  • Isolation. Shutting yourself off and either manically preparing or telling yourself you are, when really you're watching episode after episode of Supernatural? Firstly, if you are manically preparing, CHILL OUT. You will only burn yourself out, we don't have long but it is long enough to over do it and crash and burn at the end. If you are subconsciously procrastinating, there is only one thing for it. Get off that illegal streaming website, it is just slowly your computer down for when you have to do real work. Go outside, take a walk, work out what you need to do, do it a bit at a time. Treat yourself to a cheeky episode at the end of the day if you have done all your work.
  • Defeat. Telling yourself you can't do it, so you don't even try? I'll put my hands up, I'm guilty of this. How do you know you can't do it, if you haven't even tried? My Nanna, and now my boyfriend, always say to me "can't just isn't a thing" you CAN technically do anything you want to do. The only things that are really stopping you are fear, social acceptance and in some cases, the law...(but not for what i'm encouraging you to do, I hope..)
  • Busying yourself. Busying may not be a word, I think it is... Anyway, filling your time with other things, distractions, it may even be things that are highly productive, just not for uni. For example, I am working and doing external writing and recording for other people and my own personal demos/portfolio. Yes, this is incredibly important and things I need to be doing. There is just one problem, balance is key. Work out what is actually the priority here, if you have to turn down shifts at work, do it. If you have to put your personal stuff on hold for a day or two, to finish a piece of work, do it. Okay, somethings may have deadlines, but everyone understands University doesn't just 'get put on hold' in your third year. If you have a deadline, speak to the person, they may just give you a bit of a break.

Writing all of those, I do feel like a bit of a hypocrite. My parents will be the first to say, I am notoriously bad for a few of those.
I had a little FaceTime date with my Mum yesterday and I actually got a lot out of it. It is good to sit with someone who knows you and can see what you are doing from the outside for advice.
I personally get quite bad anxieties when I am panicking, which I won't go into now, but it causes me a lot of quite detrimental problems, so I have to be extra careful to stay calm, plan ahead, keep a balance between work and play. Whether you get anxiety or not, these things are all very important for productivity.

I found this on Pinterest, it is pretty bang on! You may have to zoom in a little bit if you're as blind as me..
So here are some of my own few building blocks to help you out for these crazy few months we have voluntarily entered ourselves into:

  • Get a calendar, write on it when all your deadlines are.
  • Write a list of all the things you need to do for each deadline
  • Draw a timeline (or use your calendar) and mark in when each of these things needs to be done by
  • Make it reasonable, leave time to have chill out time with friends/family
  • Make a to do list every week and tick the items off as you go
  • HAVE ONE DAY OFF EVERY WEEK OR TWO WEEKS. I can't stress this one enough
  • Stay healthy, go to the gym, eat well, sleep well, drink lots of water. It does effect how you perform.
  • Take breaks during the day, read/watch the news, a short episode of something, paint your nails...whatever...
  • If you don't get what you needed to do done, don't stress, just do it tomorrow. Give yourself a bit of leeway when writing your to do list (make it reasonable). Not so much that you take advantage and put things off though
  • You have 5 months. 5 MONTHS of this. Then you have the whole of summer to chill out. 5 MONTHS. That's nothing, it's not even half a year, you'll smash it, just take it step at a time. Believe in yourself, I sure as hell believe in you.
I will leave you with this to think about,  hopefully inspire you to stay focused through these crazy few months! Powerful words!

Much Love and Good Luck!

Your mind set is more powerful than you know!

I don't even know where to start with this week...

Firstly, I have had such a good week, it has been quite eye opening.
I am going to start by letting you into my little personal world a bit, by telling you what my best friend said to me a couple of weeks ago. With completely good intentions she said 'I love you, but you have so much bad energy around you recently, it's just not good for you or anyone else around you.' At first, as you can imagine, my reaction was something a long the lines of 'I am going to listen and pretend I care, then in five minutes I am going to not talk to you for a week because that was mean.' In all honesty, I am a horrible person, because that is exactly what I did, at first.
It took about a week before what she had said to me resurfaced in my mind again, when I was sat in bed on my own. She was right. I was letting everything get on top of me and weigh me down, sap the life out of me, I kept relying on excuses to not do things. I was not happy.
I am a singer, as fun as that sounds (and it is), it is also a labour of love, you have to push so hard with networking, songwriting, vocal techniques, into such a teeny tiny space of about a 2% chance of success. Cat, my best friend, is a singer as well, so she understands the commitment you have to put into it, which I hadn't been for such a long time. I had just been dampened by the fear of putting in my all and getting nothing back, which in itself was scaring me because it was even less likely I'd get anywhere. Approaching my last year at uni, that is not good.

What Cat said to me really made me think, yes it sounds very 'hippy', but surrounding yourself with good energy is so important.
Just that one committed moment, that I decided to change my mind set, changed everything in just one week. I prepared for my exams in a much more productive and involved way (anyone who has tried to sing jazz harmonies will feel my pain), I got half of my Christmas shopping done, I completed my to-do list that had things lingering on it for a while and I spent a day in the studio recording my first cover, which will hopefully be up soon. Above everything, I have been so happy this week, my relationships with Parents, friends and my boyfriend have all picked up and for the first time in a very long time, everything has felt promising and bright.

So what I am trying to say is, listen to and trust your close friends (if they are worthy of it!), and always try and take some 'you-time', your mind is an incredibly strong thing, you need to own it. So, get a cup of camomile tea and some candles, to think about where you are at the present moment and finely tweak the energy surrounding you. You will be surprised what a difference it makes.

I am now going to leave you with one of my favourite quotes to have a little think about, by the one and only Dr. Seuss:
